It was a real shame to see the passing of Richard
Pryor, he was a massive influence and was a huge part
in creating the foundation of modern comedy. He leaves
a great legacy in his wake and will be sorely missed.

him once in LA live at The Comedy Store around 1996.
It took him a while to get to the stage.
He told us at the time that he had MS. He said he caught
it off his wife. It was when she had PMS. |

Gorillaz
have been nominated for an outstanding five awards
at next year's
Grammys: Record of the Year - Feel Good Inc.; Best
Pop Collaboration with Vocals - Feel Good Inc. (with
De La Soul); Best Urban Alternative Performance -
Dirty Harry; Producer of the Year - Danger Mouse;
Best Short Form Music Video - Feel Good Inc. Winners
will be announced at the ceremony on 8th February
in Los Angeles.
Reached for comment at Kong Studios, the band
had this to say:
Murdoc: Oh
it’s that time of year again is it? The ‘Grab-A-Grammy’
Competition. Five nominations?! That’s great…Record
of the Year? Really? Well I’d have to agree with
that. I bought a copy for definite. In fact it hasn’t
been off my turntable all year.
Russel: On
behalf of Gorillaz I’d like to say how pleased
we are with these nominations. Dangermouse did such
an incredible job with the production on this record,
so it’s great that he’s nominated for Best
Producer.
2D:
Yeah, we just heard. Five nominations… That’s
er… wicked. My mum’s gonna be well pleased.
Noodle:
On behalf of all of Gorillaz I’d like to say
we’re all really pleased to hear this… De
La Soul gave us such a great rap for ‘Feelgood
Inc’ so its great that we’re nominated for
the Best Pop Collaboration. But I’m really excited
to hear about all of these nominations. It’s
a real honour.
2D:
‘Best Urban Alternative Performance’?…Wow!
That’s a mouthful. But Dirty Harry’s a great
song and the kids choir sang so well on it. Er…Thanks
for the nomination.
Russel:
Plus working with Bootie Brown was an absolute pleasure.
He’s one of the most well-mannered and considerate
people you're ever gonna meet.
Murdoc:
For once I’m…speechless. Really. I genuinely
hope we win…’cos…er…I hear Grammys
go for a really good price on E-bay. It’s incredible,
isn’t it? Five Grammy nominations and I still
can’t get someone to come round and unblock the
drains…Our studio stinks.

TO FIND A STAR |
It’s official:
Noodle, Murdoc, 2D and Russel have been busy wading through
an epic tidal wave of new artists and potential collaborators,
in their quest to unearth brave new stars. Now it’s
time for the verdict. The future is bright, the future
is Kong-sized.
Search For A Star has seen more than 100 entries per week
whittled down to around 10 to be put forward for the public
vote. The 200+ entries displayed so far have been viewed
over a million times.
Submissions have included pictures, music and videos;
artists, musicians, circus acts, directors, special effects
dons and weirdos have produced everything from cinematic
genius to oddball homebrew fun. Hundreds of talented animators
have put forward entries using a wide range of techniques,
from stop frame to hand drawn to computer animation. With
over 1000 image entries submitted alone the site will
be opening a gallery room after the competition to display
even more of the talent that SFAS has uncovered.
23 PRELIMINARY ROUNDS
Over the 20 weeks since kick-off, Search For A Star has
shone a light on a startling array of impressive entries,
creaming off the best via weekly public votes. There are
just 2 more weekly public rounds to go - the 23rd round
is a wild card round and is reserved for the entries from
previous weeks that Gorillaz think deserve another chance.
Entries have already closed for the final round so if
you've got through, now is the time to start chewing those
finger nails in anticipation.
LUCKY 13
On 18th July the daily public vote begins.
All 23 leading entries will be displayed on TV screens
in the Search For A Star room. Visitors can vote on their
least favourite entry, with the 2 finalists with the least
votes booted off at the end of the day. By Saturday 23rd
only the lucky 13 finalists will be left, as the competition
hurtles on to its explosive conclusion.
AND THEN THERE WERE 3...
The competition intensifies on the 25th - 2 more entries
per day will be voted off every day until only 3 remain.
From the 1st August the voting takes a different tack
- visitors will be asked to nominate their favourite to
win.
THE WINNER!
The glorious winning entry (and the winner's fabulous
prize) will be announced on Wednesday 3rd August. The
winner will be invited to collaborate with Gorillaz in
a manner suitable to their unique talent.

ABOUT NEW VIDEO
The brand new video for 'Feel Good Inc' is here now for
you to see. The band have been very busy making it - 2D
and Murdoc speak out for the first time about excess and
hedonism, exactly what the video's about and what really
happened on the shoot...
2D: I think Gorillaz built a tower around themselves that
they couldn’t get out of. Of excess and hedonism.
The video is based on this feeling. For a while it was
great to be on the inside, but the party’s got out
of hand. It’ s become like the Last days of Pompeii….a…er…Sodding
Gommorah. The Feelgood Inc Tower represents this. The
palace we built has become a prison. In the video I’m
just waking up from this year-long hedonists dream, and
I realise that maybe… the fruits of success have
turned sour.
Noodle is outside of the Tower, in the pale morning-after
light, sitting on the edge of this floating island. And
you can see she knows what’s happening. But people
have to wake up to it themselves. So that’s what
the video is about; being trapped by the things you make,
and realising everyone else is caught up in it. Using
it. Just…they need their party to continue, to keep
this thing afloat. The Tower of Babel.
Murdoc: Apart from the obvious thing, which is my gyrating
hips, the coolest thing about the video would be the the
hydraulics on this gig. Just for the windmill section
alone cost about 3.5 million pounds. That’s sterling.
We had to buy a small island, make a mold of it and then
scrape out all the insides. When that was done we filled
the whole thing full of helium. Using the motor from the
windmill we managed to get the thing to float, but it
was an absolute bugger.

Gorillaz previewed their new album, Demon Days' for the
first time at last weekend's South by South West festival
in the USA. Damon Albarn and Dangermouse turned up to talk
to the media about the contrbutions they'd made to the record.
The band had a lot to say about it.
Murdoc: Well the thing about Gorillaz is that so many
people involved in it just feel a need to overplay their
part. If Damon Albarn and Dangermouse want to swan around
Texas around telling people that they made the album, fine.
It just highlights their desperate lust for glory really.
There’s only four people who are responsible for making
that record. Me, Noodle, Russel and er…2D. And to
be honest, mate, I’ve even got my suspicions about
some of them.
Russel: Both Damon & Dangermouse gave us a lot of support
in making this album. There’s no way, despite the
devastating skills that Gorillaz have as a band, that this
album would have coming out sounding as it does without
the work that they did. I feel it’s right for them
to talk about their input in its creation. Also Gorillaz
have always tried to do as little live TV promotion as possible,
in order to keep the mystique, so in a way they’re
kinda helping us out.
Noodle: Pah! I am not concerned with talk shows and your
TV pie. My time is more valuable. I am already busy demo-ing
for the Third Gorillaz album. Then this trilogy will have
it’s conclusion.
2D: South by Southwest? That’s in Texas ain’t
it. I hope Albarn brings me back a nice hat.
Russel: We asked them both to be the ambassadors for the
‘Demon Days’ album. Having had more of a first-hand
insight into its creation they are in a perfect position
to represent it to the outside world. Also I think Murdoc
has already done enough damage by overstating his limited
opinions in the press. So in order to keep the campaign
fresh we thought it would be good for people to get a new
angle on the music from these two, rather than just the
usual venomous comments from our bass-player. Both Damon
and Dangermouse are real music lovers so I’m sure
they can talk about the album with integrity.

GORILLAZ RETURN
WITH DEMON DAYS
"Every great band is destroyed by their success: cartoon
bands are no exception."
So says Gorillaz guitarist Noodle, who took the helm for
new album Demon Days, the follow-up to the band's multi-million
selling debut Gorillaz. "Noodle wrote most of this album
herself," says drummer Russel Hobbs. "Murdoc may try and
take the credit for it, but from the basic sketches to
the finished album, this was Noodle's vision."
Demon Days will be released on 23rd May (11th may Japan,
24th May in the US), and will be preceeded by the single
Feel Good Inc, released 9th May.
Co-produced by Gorillaz/Damon Albarn and the Grey Album
mastermind Danger Mouse, Demon Days was recorded at the
band's own Kong Studios.
The album is a darker and more intense affair than 2001's
Gorillaz, explains Noodle: "The soul of the recording
can't avoid being a manifestation of the time, climate
and location of the place we were in when it was recorded.
Consequently the colours are rich, dark and heavy while
the rhythms are clean, strategic and relentless. It has
a consciousness to it."
"Like someone has taken the first album and coloured it
in," adds singer 2D.
Gorillaz reputation for excellence and enthusiasm has
secured them a stellar guest list. Featured on the album
are contributions from De La Soul, Neneh Cherry, Martina
Topley-Bird, Roots Manuva, MF Doom, Ike Turner, Bootie
Brown of the Pharcyde, Shaun Ryder, Dennis Hopper, the
London Community Gospel Choir and the San Fernandez Youth
Chorus.

have completed recording their brand new album. The very
first outing for the forthcoming album is said to be happening
at this years' South by South West festival in the USA.
Murdoc is rumoured to be taking the album over in person.
He said, "I'm hand-delivering this precious baby myself.
One slip up and these 15 tracks of gold will be splashed
all over the internet faster than you can say 'bring forward
the release date'" We'll keep you posted on all the latest
news on the album release as soon as we have it.

of her past, she now speaks English. What's more, Noodle has also
written a brand new album for the band!
